Causes of Ovarian Cysts

Causes of Ovarian CystsThere are several different types of ovarian cysts and each type of cyst has its own cause. In some cases adjustment in lifestyle or even eating habits may reduce the instances of ovarian cysts for some women. Whilst in other cases there seems to be little that can be done to prevent the development of a cyst. Let’s have a look at the various causes of ovarian cysts.
Causes of Functional cysts

The most common type of ovarian cyst occurs during the menstrual cycle. These types of cysts are usually benign and disappear on their own within two or three cycles. Here are the causes of ovarian cysts that occur during the menstrual cycle. At the beginning of the menstrual cycle, a follicle develops inside the ovary surrounding the egg with fluid. When the time is right, the follicle bursts open and releases the egg and the fluid washes the egg down the fallopian tube. The follicle then closes. However, in some cases before the follicle can close completely, it becomes filled with fluid and that develops into a cyst.

Lutuem cysts are also formed in a similar way to follicle cysts. The lutuem, which normally dissolves when the egg is not fertilized, sometimes becomes filled with fluid and is unable to dissolve, forming a cyst. In this case, the cyst also usually resolves itself within a couple of cycles.

Taking birth control pills can prevent these cysts from forming and birth control pills interrupt the menstrual cycle thus eliminating the causes of ovarian cysts that are functional in nature.

Causes of Dermoid Cysts

Dermoid cysts on the other hand are formed in a different way to functional cysts. The cause of  dermoid ovarian cysts happens when germ cells actually contain bits of the egg. For this reason, a dermoid cyst has various types of solid matter such as hair, teeth and bone within it. Most often dermoid cysts are removed as the solid material makes them unlikely to diminish on their own.

Medical Conditions Leading to Ovarian Cysts

Various medical conditions are also the cause for ovarian cysts. Endometriosis related cysts occur when uterine tissue flakes from the uterus and becomes attached to the ovary. This tissue then fills with fluid (usually blood) and will continue to fill until the cyst is removed or becomes so large that it ruptures. Women who suffer from Endometriosis are quite likely to get endometriom cysts.

Hormonal imbalance is also one of the causes of ovarian cysts. In fact, polycystic ovarian syndrome is due almost entirely to an imbalance of hormones caused by an excess of insulin. This condition may lead to multiple cysts on the ovaries. Diet, exercise and medication are used to get the hormones back into balance and therefore prevent future problems with these types of cysts.
